Your Guide to Getting Started with Pilates
The Questions Everyone Asks
Pilates attracts beginners, busy professionals, prenatal/postpartum clients, mothers, athletes, and anyone looking to reconnect with their body. If you are thinking about starting but are unsure what to expect, these are the questions we hear most often.
FAQ
-
Do I need experience before starting?
No. Pilates is built for beginners. You do not need to be flexible or strong. You do not need to know the moves. In a foundation class, your instructor will guide you through every step, so that you can move safely and efficiently.
-
What should I wear and bring to a Pilates class?
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing so your instructor can see your alignment. Bring water and socks, ideally socks with grips if you are using equipment like the Pilates Reformer.
-
What is the difference between Pilates mat and Pilates Reformer?
Pilates Mat classes use bodyweight and small props, and can sometimes be a more challenging but also more efficient workout. Pilates reformer classes use a moving carriage and springs that add resistance and support and are great for any beginner and those recovering from injuries. Both build core strength and body awareness and are part of the Pilates Method - a controlled movement system that strengthens the body from the core outward, improves alignment, and teaches you how to move with precision, breath, and stability
-
Is Pilates beginner friendly?
Yes, Pilates starts with small, precise movements that teach your body how to move with control. Many beginners feel a difference in posture and strength immediately and move on to more challenging routines as they master the foundations.
-
How often should I attend classes?
Consistency helps you to build a foundation and feel the real benefits. Two to three times a week is ideal for beginners. At EmbodyMind, we offer affordable membership packages to encourage a consistent practice
-
Can Pilates help during and after pregnancy?
Absolutely, with proper guidance. The science is out there. Low impact exercise, like Pilates, is not only beneficial for expected mothers but also can have many advantages for the baby. For post-pregnancy, Pilates supports rebuilding core connection, pelvic floor strength and full-body stability. Many prenatal and postpartum clients start here for exactly that reason.
-
What if I have injuries?
Pilates is one of the safest ways to return to movement. We modify any exercise to support your body and to help you progress with care. Make sure to get your doctor’s approval and let your teacher know of any prior injuries before starting class.
-
Will I be sore?
Most likely yes, but in a good way. Pilates activates deep, stabilizing muscles that often do not get much attention in daily movement. These muscles will make your exercise and movement practices more efficient over time and will pay off in a big way.
-
What does a first class usually feel like?
Expect a calm, focused session with controlled movements, breath cues and exercises that will be surprisingly challenging, but in a good way. You will feel more connected to your body and mind by the end of the class.es here
